Svärdskog

Hanko, Finland

Svärdskog is a seafront home in Hanko, set directly on its own sandy beach with wide views across the Baltic Sea. Designed with care and guided by Nordic aesthetics, it brings together light-filled interiors, natural materials, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the sea from the main living area, where the open layout, wood-burning fireplace, and soft tones create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. The kitchen is well equipped and includes a Sage Barista espresso machine, a thoughtful detail for slow mornings with a view.

A wood-fired sauna and outdoor shower complete the experience, offering a distinctly Finnish way to enjoy the shoreline in every season. The terrace and lounge area provide space to spend time outdoors, whether for shared meals, quiet reading, or simply watching the changing light over the water.

With its private beach, refined design, and close relationship to the sea, Svärdskog provides a peaceful and well-considered stay on Finland’s southern coast.

Location

Hanko

Svärdskog is located in Hanko, Finland’s southernmost town, known for its long sandy beaches, historic villas, and maritime atmosphere. The area combines open sea views with pine forests and rocky shorelines, making it a favourite summer destination.

Hanko offers a lively harbour with restaurants and cafés, cycling and walking routes along the coast, and landmarks such as Hanko Water Tower and the old Spa Park villas. The town is also rich in history, with remnants of its role as a naval outpost and Finland’s gateway to the sea. Seasonal events, local markets, and ferry connections to nearby islands make Hanko a vibrant yet charming base for exploring the southern archipelago.

From The Owner

Anders Fredrik Gylphe (1843–1927) moved from Sweden to Täktom as a young agricultural engineer with a vision of establishing a modern farm. He cultivated vegetables on the land and even built a small railroad to transport the produce. Beyond farming, he also contributed to the design of several parks in Hangö (Hanko).

When Anders purchased the farmland, it included forest and coastal areas. At the time, summering by the sea was not yet a fashionable pursuit. One of his and his wife’s ten children, Ebba Gylphe-Donner, later built a summer house on Gloskär in Täktom during the 1920s. This house was destroyed by Russian forces during World War II. After Hanko was returned to Finland, Ebba and her family built a new summer house in 1947 on Ryssholmen, part of the Svärdskog estate. The year 1947 can still be seen marked on the garage.

Today, Ebba’s grandson owns the property. As the old house had deteriorated, he undertook a complete rebuild in 2024–2025. The new Villa Svärdskog represents modern Finnish architecture at its finest, yet it preserves many echoes of the past. The proportions, shapes, and angles of the windows recall the original house, while heirlooms such as the old ship model and selected paintings continue to grace the interior.

This careful balance of contemporary design and family heritage creates a distinctive atmosphere, one that both honours tradition and carries it forward for future generations.
